Tennis is played on a rectangular, smooth surface, which can be made of various materials.
The court must also allow for additional space on the sides and at the back to reach balls in play that go beyond the court boundaries; according to international regulations, these dimensions must be 3.65 meters and 6.40 meters, respectively.
The dividing net must be 0.914 m high at the center and 1.07 m high at the posts that support it.
The surface on which tennis is played is of great importance. Within each type of surface, there are considerable differences depending on the composition of the material used in its construction. The most important of these is the way the ball bounces on each surface.
For that reason, tracks are classified as slow or fast:
The slow courts are courts where the ball bounces higher and slower. Points played on slow courts are usually longer.
The fast courts are those where the opposite occurs: lower, faster bounces and shorter rallies.
