As true tennis lovers, we like to remember the sport’s greats who, through their careers and professionalism, defined an era. Today we dedicate this article to Andrés Gimeno, a great champion and tennis pioneer born in Barcelona. Gimeno made his mark on the history of Spanish and world tennis after winning Roland Garros in 1972, making him the oldest man in history to win this tournament at the age of 34 years and 10 months.
Gimeno rose to worldwide fame after reaching the doubles final at the French Open in 1960, and he would go on to make a name for himself in the world of tennis by winning the doubles title at Wimbledon in 1967, before the Open Era. Among his professional highlights was reaching the final of the Australian Open on grass in 1969, just before winning Roland Garros in 1972, which catapulted him to global fame.
In addition to his successful career, we at Reindesa have fond memories of him because Andrés Gimeno was the face of Tenis Reindesa in the late 1960s and early 1970s. We will always remember him.
